In Småland where Jöns probably lived, times were unstable and the farmers were stubborn people who opposed the reigning kings. Dackefejden 1542-43 was such a rebellion led by a Småland farmer, Nils Dacke from southern Småland – they opposed against the taxes forced by Gustav Vasa. Småland had been quite independent before Gustav Vasa took over 1523. The decades following were economically hard and the people suffered. Småland was hit hard by the Swedish-Danish wars taking place 1500-1600-centuries.

Sweden is since 1527 protestantic dominantly. The Lutheran Church is the State church.
