Emil was born in Flisby P. as Johanna Marias first child and Sven Magnus second son. He had one older half-brother Isak Ludvig, and 7 younger siblings: Johan Edvard– 2 years younger, Ester 4 years younger who died only 1 year old, Oscar Henrik 6 years younger, Carl Anders 9 years younger, Mathilda 11 years younger, Axel Wilhelm 14 years younger and Anna Alida who only reached 20 years of age and was born 3 months after Emil had emigrated.
He was the first of the children who moved to the US – 29/4 1882 together with his aunt Ida Charlotta and her 7-year-old son Johan Peterson.
He was only 17 years old at the time and had only 20 dollar at hand as he arrived in the US. When emigrating he took the name Tyden. He became successful and went back and forth to Sweden several times and is registered as passenger on Ellis Island. In the registries there it said that he was “a sailor with a lady on one arm”.
He married Minnie H. Johnson 20/2 1895. She was born 8/2 1872- 7 years younger than himself. He was then 30 years old. They settled in Hastings, Mich.
They had a daughter: Florence 1896. They had a second daughter 1902, Ellinor, who died 2 months old in August 27.
He created a prosperous life. He was an inventor and a successful businessman. At the time of his death he had 200 patents. He built well-equipped farms at the time of the Great depression. He was respected and loved by the people around. See Article about him and his history and his great-grandson Tom Groose.
He also took part of WWI and became a Colonel. See movie below.
Emil went back and fourth to Sweden several times during his life. He often visited with family. He also arranged for younger siblings and relatives to come and work in Hastings where he lived. For instance for Maria Johansson/Bjurström/Paerson- cousin of his- he paid her ticket to the US 1911 in exchange for her working at his house for some time after she arrived. Several of his siblings who emigrated later took the same last name Tyden. He also visited his big cousinfamily of Emma Sofia in Minnesota – see picture:
He brought his mother Johanna Maria to the US when his father died in Sweden. He was then 44 years old. Together with his family: Minnie and Florence, they brought her to the States on a ship Laurentic, going from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada 19th of August 1909. She stayed in the US for the rest of her life.
Emil was an inventive and industrious young man. He built up an industry in ups and downs and when his industry went into fire and some people suggested he would join their business instead of rebuilding, he found out all about fire security and invented articles around it instead and the Viking corp. is still running developing this and many other things.
Here is a movie where his grand-son Richard Groos is telling about Emil Tydens life and achievements:
To go visit a Tyden farm in Dougherty, Iowa: see Article
Minnie died at the age of 61 years old 12/1 1934- 17 years before Emil.
In the household of Emil, they had a maid called Sigrid Schiolberg from Norway, born 1887. She stayed in their family for long.
He died in Hastings, Barry, Michigan 26/11 1951- 86 years old, where there is still a park called Tyden Park.
