Richard was the son of Florence Tyden Groos and Rickard A Groos and was born in Evanston, Illinois.

He traveled with his mother and grandfather Emil Tyden  to Sweden when he was 8 years old, 11 of August 1938, on the ship Kungsholm, between Gothenburg and NewYork. His grandfather was then 73 years old.

He married Ethel, born 1932?. They have 4 children: Catherine, Nicholas, Fred, Tom.

He picked up the family tradition becoming the head of Viking corp. and Tyden International Lock&Seal co later followed by his son Tom Groose.
